Perspective Police

I was riding home after working late this night. Normally I carry battery powered bicykle lights in my backpack, but this day I had forgot to take them with me. I thought, "What the heck! I'll take my chances", mounted the bike and started my trip home.

I was riding down a "yard street" (It means that cars are allowed only under special circumstances- and allways has to leve way for pedestrians and bikers when they do).

There is a lot of bike traffic at this particular street as it leads from the bar street towards campus.

It's also quite lit up. From a distance I happend to notice a reflex of the warning lights of a police car, so I stepped off my bike and continued by foot, leading my bike.

Yes. about 50 meters ahead I found two patroll cars and four polices that were pulling over bicyklists with no lights! I mean- I broke the law and everything, I'm very aware of that.

But standing around the patrol cars were atleast 15 kids (and more walking away, leading their bikes!) They had all got fined with 500 kr (49€ / $65)...

Meanwhile there are murderers walking on our streets!

Perspective police- police perspective...

Here in the Dallas, TX area a few years ago, we ranked highest in the nation for the commission of violent crimes committed. This was during the same period our local chief of police instituted "rolling roadblocks" which consisted of police cars driving abreast of each other down the main thoroughfares in order to deter speeders. Another lack of perspective in action.

I'm happy to say he was relieved of his duties not too long afterwards.

Don't you know? Murderers don't have money... and kids with bikes... umm...do... Well, lunch money, at least!

Maybe with the new fine/protection money the cops can give everyone a light! How's that for socialism at work? You'll be able to SEE the grim road ahead of you, instead of peddling blindly in the dark! ;-P

Here in the US, just about anywhere I've been, if you see a cop pull someone over, immediately, seemingly teleporting in, 4-5 more police show up, leaving the surrounding area "unprotected." Alternately, you can sit on the side of the road for an hour trying to flag someone down without any luck...

We just had an "Octoberfest" and it seemed like the entire local police force was on patrol... I don't know what for... non-standard bratwursts? Improper keg tapping? Cutting in line for the porta-potty? Surely a couple of officers could have stood guard over the masses of people listening to bad polka music and drinking beer while their comrades went after criminals...

Heh!

I and some friends of mine did the catering at a country festival here a couple of years ago.

The first year we did it, the festival arrangers did ask the local police to patrole the area (it was a bit outback), but got a no, negative never. It just would cost to much money blahblahblah.

The "country" festival did just not have country artists and or bands. There were also a lot of rock music, Swedish alternative pop and such.

Many of the bands and artists was big names here in Sweden aswell as internationally.

Well, surprise, surprise. When it all started to get crowded and getting on. Suddenly there were atleast 40 polices present. One of them came and talked to me while I was humping kegs. I asked him why they all where there when just the day before the police master had refused to send in a singel patrol.

He answered:

"We like the music!"

(And they of course did not have to pay any entrance fee...)

At the same time...
