Proud Infidel ranting about the ongoing war against democratic and secular values (Don't fool yourselves)! Maybe a voice of sanity in a wide ocean of madness.

Anticant!

"Whether or not Voltaire actually said that he tolerated everything except intolerance, there's more than enough intolerance abroad these days to keep would-be tolerators busy!"

He is really to good to be true!
I really wish I could sit down with him and have a conversation.
Over a pint and some nice fish! (And maby a fine, smokey Scotch)!
Too bad the language barriers probably would set a wall between us...

But anyway, Anticant, You'll always be in my mind!

Arbroath Smokies are fine by me, Pela!

I'm not all that special - just someone of a certain age, who grew up during the Second World War when we Brits KNEW that we were going to win, regardless of anybody else and whatever the odds, because what we were fighting against was evil incarnate. [The Swedes, of course, remained neutral.]

We are now confronted with an equally evil and ruthless totalitarian ideology, but sadly very many in Europe and the USA, even including our so called 'leaders', still refuse to recognise this - or even if they pay lip-service to the concept don't devise and implement effective strategies for defeating it.

I am constantly haunted by my childhood memories of the 1930s: appeasement, Munich, and all that. In those days, many influential people turned a blind eye to the menace which the Nazis posed to democratic freedoms. As Rachel Ehrenfeld says in her book 'Funding Evil', "comfortable and tolerant societies find it difficult to accept that they are vulnerable to other societies that might wish to do them harm." Six years after '9/11', this is still the majority view in the West, which I find very alarming.

Hitler in a burqa? Whenever I go to London hospital outpatients - as I frequently do - and sit near one of those burly figures swathed from head to foot in a black blanket with eyes peering out through two narrow slits, I'm a bit anxious in case she [he?] suddenly whips out a Kalashnikov and starts shooting wildly in all directions.....

Just paranoia, of course......

That sort of reminds me of when I did practise at a "Vårdcentral" - Health care station? Well anyway, many, maby 50% of the patients were ME:s. They would often come in the whole family. Sometimes as many as 10 people or so!

The clinic room was quite small and there could be some serious crowding.

Most of the patients were women. And I was not allowed to touch them! I could not take their BP or even make any use of my stetoscope...

That makes it really easy to do an anamanes??

At the same time all the family members are trying to tell me what illness the patient has!

In 99.9 % of the cases it was nothing more than the flu anyway. But still they insisted on getting medicine (antibiotics).

Every such case could take everything from 30 minuts up to an hour. And I had a projected (budgeted) time of 5 minutes for each patient. Time that the following patients did NOT get...

And the chatter, oh my the chatter!
